DAVIS FERRY UPDATE – June 20, 2016

Davis Ferry Closed Again…

Unfortunately, I got word today from the Monroe County Engineer that Davis Ferry is closed again, this time due to a caving of the west bank near the cable tower following the flooding over the past winter. When I get any word of the ferry reopening I will post here again. – David Haynes

All three of Blount County’s historic covered bridges are now reopened to traffic. Photos below show the bridges in late March 2013.

UPDATE – April 4, 2013: As of the end of March 2013 all three of Blount County’s historic covered bridges have reopened to daily traffic and riders can use the maps and descriptions in the book with confidence when planning a trip or riding in the area. This marks the first time in more than five years all three bridges – Swann, Easley and Horton Mill – are all open.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Guntersville State Park took a direct hit from the tornadoes on 5/27/11. Substantial tree damage and structure damage to lakeside cabins, chalets and the hotel. Roads are open, but be prepared for logging companies clearing the debris and some backed up traffic and wait time. I don’t know what has been re-opened to the public but you can check their website for details. The park will not ever look the same. It’s really depressing to ride thru the devastation (made my wife cry).

Great job David Haynes I am really surprised that there are so few comments here. Everyone that I know who has seen the book or purchased it is giving it raves including myself. I am looking forward to riding the well laid out loops in our wonderful state.
I did the ride loop 29 last Saturday. A beautiful day, a beautiful ride, I just wanted to point out one little part of the ride at turn no. 5 (keep left on Cahaba River Dr/CR-24
2.5 miles) is really rough, very poor road conditions (potholes galore). I would advise staying on Marvel Rd./Hwy 10 until it reaches CR-24 then take a left.
I’m sorry I missed you at the Barber Vintage Festival, I look forward to meeting you someday.
Thank you for providing motorcycle riders from all over such a valuable and resourceful tool to assist in riding Alabama. Roll Tide
